Retirement Living Trip Hazard Mitigation in Cambridge, Ontario
Trip hazard mitigation from Groundworks restored safety at this retirement living facility in Cambridge, Ontario. Read more here.

The Challenge
At a retirement living facility, settlement of concrete walkways created trip hazards for elderly residents.
The Solution
Groundworks chose polyurethane injection concrete leveling to mitigate trip hazards.
The Impact
Safety was restored to the concrete walkways in less than a day.
The Challenge
Concrete walkway settlement created trip hazards at retirement facility.
In Cambridge, Ontario, a retirement facility was experiencing 1-2 inches of settlement in 8 locations on their concrete walkways throughout the facility. Not only was this aesthetically displeasing, but it also created a risk for trips and falls. In a community where elderly are already at higher risk for falls and injuries, having hazards like this was unacceptable. Beyond the immediate risk to residents and visitors, the facility also faced potential liability if the walkways were left unaddressed. Compounding the issue was the settlement of the wheelchair ramp and the fact that some of the concrete walkways were hard to reach. In order to restore safety, mitigate liabilities for the facility itself, and restore peace of mind, concrete leveling was a must.

The Solution
Concrete leveling with polyurethane.
Groundworks was contacted to resolve the settlement, trip hazards, and restore the concrete. Technicians drilled small, strategically placed holes in the walkway and wheelchair ramp. Polyurethane was then injected through the holes in its liquid form. The material flowed under the slab and gently lifted the concrete back to grade. This precise process eliminated the trip hazards and returned the walkways to a safe, functional condition.
The Impact
Trip hazards mitigated in a day.
Over 400 square feet of concrete walkway was stabilized including the wheelchair ramp, and all major trip hazards were corrected within a single day. This eliminated the risk of trip hazards caused by the uneven concrete. Because polyurethane cures rapidly, the walkways were ready for use immediately after the work was complete. Beyond restoring functionality, the repair provided a long-term stabilization solution for the slabs, helping to prevent future settlement. The facility gained not only a safer environment, but also peace of mind knowing the walkways were restored quickly, effectively, and with minimal impact on daily operations.
